The Onset Of Mixed Media Art

Posted on 20/02/2023

What we know presently as mixed media art began in early 20th century, when artists searching for an alternative to what they saw as hidebound academicism began including things and images that weren’t considered to be art elements in their works. Examples of everyday materials being included in ceremonial or aesthetic items are available dating back to prehistory, however, these were created with various motives, and provided a very different social purpose than the objects referred to as “art.”

In 1912, Picasso included a piece of chair caning into 1 of his many works. While this work looks tame nowadays, it was actually quite radical at that time, when the thought of art needed a removal from the everyday world. By bridging the partition between paint and reality, Picasso served to to bring on a time of radical change in art, when rules were dumped and materials of all types started to be seen as capable of becoming art. 5 years later, in 1917, Marcel Duchamp displayed a urinal in an art show. Whether he was trying to make the point that everything is art, or that nothing is art, has been the subject of debate ever since. Duchamp’s discovery of the “ready-made,” as he called the urinal as well as other things that he chose, erased the line between art and life more completely than Picasso had accomplished.

In the 1920s, people of the Dada movement incorporated newspapers, detritus off the street, and pieces of wood, dressmakers’ dummies and many other objects in their artwork. Even though Dada was a self-proclaimed anti-art movement, their continuation of Picasso’s and Duchamp’s use of “non-art” things within an artistic context aided to encourage the development of mixed-media art, resulting in the continuation, rather than the destruction, of art.

In the 50s, Arman became very successful as an artist mainly by putting together large numbers of items in one place. His unique style was a collection of objects like wrenches, cutlery or philadelphia phillies t shirt contained within a plexiglass box. Many have viewed his art as either a condemnation or a celebration of mass usage, the real beauty of it being it could be either. In the 1960s, Jean Tinguely built sculptures out of pieces of steel and other metals, found objects and gears. The unique feature of Tinguely’s masterpieces was that they’re animated and self-destroying. When Tinguely had finished a work, he would arrange a performance to which hundreds of individuals would come and watch his chaotic creations break themselves into oblivion.

Mixed media art is any type of art that combines 2 or more mediums in a single work. Assemblages as well as collages are generally forms of mixed media which are famous in the 21st century. The mixture of painting media such as oil, acrylic and watercolour in a single work has become a popular practice among artists. The combination of various drawing media, as well as the mixture of drawing with media like painting, is another common form of mixed media art. The combination of printmaking methods, such as lithography and woodcuts, carries a long history, and advances in technology have motivated printmakers to try out mixing conventional methods with digital printing and photography.
