Parents who are considering entering their children into preschool may wonder if it is necessary, or if you have to choose between a day care and a preschool you might wonder what the differences are.
Day Care that Offers Preschool Activities
When looking at a day care that offers up preschool activities keep in mind that while you want your two and three year olds to learn things like sharing, taking turns, counting and cleaning up after themselves you don’t want to push too much learning too soon. Lynn Steinmiller of Kids’ World Preschool in Perryman Ohio, suggests that unstructured imaginative play is just as important in the toddler years as schooling.
Still some activities to look for in a good day care/preschool are reading time, circle time, an art area, and outdoor play. In some cases Daycares might participate in science projects like having the little ones plant a sunflower seed so that they can watch it grow, this is an excellent learning experience for the little ones.
Preschools- What to expect out of your Preschool
Once your child is four years old it is time for preschool, if the day care you have been using is utilizing preschool learning you should be fine, but if you want to expand into a preschool setting some things that you can expect your child to learn are basic counting, recognizing words that are read to him or her. The preschool setting should be one of developing basic skills to succeed in preschool. Like knowing how to put on their viking shirts, take off a couples shirts and hang it up. While kindergarten is really the place where your children learn to read most teachers hope that the students entering kindergarten will have some knowledge of letter sounds, it is also a good idea for the children to know how to count to ten and recognize letters one through five. Jayne Issacs suggests having children sort items by color, like legos and blocks, also have them sorting items by size and shape will help to develop these skill sets necessary to enter kindergarten.
What should your child learn?
By the end of the school year most preschoolers should be able to do the following;
1. Share toys
2. Take turns
3. Learn some letter sounds and recognize some letters on pages
4. Be able to take a couples shirts off and hang it up. Pick up after themselves if they take out toys.
5. Know how a classroom works, show respect to their teachers and fellow students.
6. Play fairly.
7. Have strong fine motor skills, be able to grasp a pencil.
8. Go to the bathroom by themselves and then wash their hands afterward.
9. Eat neatly and pour into a cup.
10. Count to ten, and recognize numbers from 1-5.
If a child doesn’t have all of these skills though do not worry, Kindergarten is there to prepare them for first grade and a lot of what was mentioned here should be covered again along with a lot more new information getting your little one ready for the next step in life.
